JoEtta Deaton Artist Statement:

Painting the names of Christ or God is presumptuous, let alone impossible. Like the lantern fly that tried to witness my bike ride. He couldn’t remain on my shoulder when I flew down a steep hill. Christ is Creator, moving at lightspeeds that I cannot follow or measure. 

So instead, I let the rich names that emerge from ancient Hebrew texts wash over me. Further drawing on modern sonnets by Malcolm Guite, I lived with these for months before responding in paint. Welcoming these mysteries seemed to require a stretching into new mindsets, new habits and new paint mediums and methods.  

May Holy Spirit take us each to new AND ancient places through music and art offered us.
