About the event
Come meet Sarah Phillips, our newest artist. She's showing her brand new collection. Read more from the artist about this exciting exhibit:
This series is a direct response to the writings of Julian of Norwich, an early Christian mystic, nun, and the first documented woman to publish written work in the English language-- which includes two works, both reflections on 16 revelations she was given by God dealing with the allowance of suffering, divine grace, pain, and recovery, and faith. Importantly, I think, for me, is that this is the first untranslated English-written work by a woman-- which means that this is one of the definitive first encounters that I, as a modern woman, have with the spiritual experiences of a woman in another time-- amidst another plague-- written from her own vernacular and perspective. I am proposing a series of paintings/collages in encaustic, wax, and salt-- all materials of major significance in the liturgical calendar and scripture- reflecting on these early revelations of a woman with whom I -- and many women in the church- share so much. This series is an exploration of time parallels, gendered experience in the faith, and the questions, faith, and pain that connect us across time.
